Import Customs Clearance: A Practical Guide for Beginners

June 30, 2026 管理员

Customs documents

If you are importing into China for the first time, customs clearance can feel overwhelming. In reality, most delays are caused by a handful of recurring mistakes.

Step 1: Classify Your Goods

The HS code determines your duty rate and regulatory requirements. Start with the broad category (first four digits), then narrow down. When in doubt, check the official customs classification rulings.

Step 2: Prepare Your Documents

At minimum: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and contract. Depending on the product, you may also need a certificate of origin, inspection certificate, or CCC certification.

Step 3: Calculate Import Duty

Import duty = customs value x duty rate. VAT is (customs value + duty) x 13%. Goods from MFN countries benefit from lower rates.

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving brand/model blank. 2. Incorrect units of measurement. 3. Not declaring wooden packaging. 4. Undervaluing goods.
